Baseball Defeats Middlebury 6-2 in Midweek Matchup

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Caleb Miller homered in the first inning and the Union College baseball team never trailed in picking up a 6-2 non-conference victory over Middlebury College on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the Central Park "A" Diamond.

Miller drove in a pair of runs and scored twice while picking up one of the team's five hits on the day. First-year Dylan Swarts scored a pair of runs while senior Sam Strazza, sophomore Noah DiCaprio and first-year AJ Cutler all drove in one run apiece.

After first-year Ryan Calvario escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the first, Union needed only two batters to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom half. First-year Will Kelly was hit by a pitch to lead off and then came home on Miller's third homer of the season. The home team tacked on one more run in the inning on an RBI double by DiCaprio that plated Strazza.

Middlebury got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk that ended Calvario's day. Senior Aidan McGee came into the game and immediately escaped danger by inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. McGee tossed a scoreless fifth before the Garnet Chargers added two more runs in the bottom half thanks to a Panther error and a Cutler RBI double. The Panthers threatened again in the sixth, getting one run and bringing the tying run to the plate before McGee got a strikeout and a pop-out to end the frame.

Senior Anthony Izzo tossed a pair of scoreless innings to get the game to the ninth, where classmate Alex Erickson came on to strike out the side.

McGee (2-1) earned the win by tossing 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and one unearned run in relief of Calvario, who allowed only one unearned run on four hits in 3.1 innings. Izzo and Erickson combined to strike out five batters over three hitless innings to close out the contest.

Union is set to begin a weekend series with Bard College on Friday afternoon with a single game at Central Park beginning at 3:30 p.m.
