SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team dropped a 10-4 matchup to Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League inter-divisional contest on a cool Saturday evening at the Central Park "A" Diamond.
Junior
Andrew Keaveney recorded a game-high three hits and drove in a run for Union (16-9, 4-3 Liberty League), while classmate
Caleb Miller and first-year
Dylan Swarts chipped in a pair of hits apiece. Four players had a pair of hits and Isaac Breagelmann drove in a game-high three runs to lead RIT (17-8, 5-5 Liberty League).
RIT got the scoring started in the top of the first with two runs, but Union battled back with single runs in the second and third to tie the score. Keaveney doubled home first-year
AJ Cutler to halve the deficit after two innings, and Swarts added an RBI single in the third to plate sophomore
Noah DiCaprio.
Momentum seemed to swing in the bottom of the fourth, when Union had the bases loaded and Miller sent a liner down the third-base line that the home-plate umpire ruled foul. RIT's John Arnold eventually induced an inning-ending groundout to escape the inning, and the Tigers took the lead for good in the sixth on a bases-clearing double by Breagelmann. The visitors tacked on two more in the seventh and three more in the ninth to extend their lead.
Union got two runs back in its final at-bat after Miller tripled and scored on a wild pitch and senior
Kyle Zaslaw plated classmate
Dan Sheeran with a groundout, but the home team could get no closer.
Senior
Chris Suter (6-1) suffered his first loss of the year for Union, allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings. Arnold (4-2) tossed six innings of two-run ball to earn the win and Owen Fisher allowed two runs in three innings to earn the save.
Union will return to the diamond tomorrow with another inter-divisional matchup against the University of Rochester. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon at Central Park.
