Calvario Pitches Union Past Mount St. Mary, 4-1

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – First-year Ryan Calvario tossed seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Union College baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Mount St. Mary College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the MSMC Baseball/Softball Complex.

Calvario improved to 3-1 on the year with his best outing of the season for Union (17-12), throwing a season-best seven innings and allowing only one run on seven hits with three strikeouts. After allowing one run in the bottom of the first, Calvario allowed only five baserunners over the next six frames and saw only two players reach third base.

Junior Andrew Keaveney had a pair of hits and first-years AJ Cutler and Dylan Swarts drove in a run each for the Garnet Chargers.

Mount Saint Mary (16-14-1) struck first three batters into the game, but Union came back with single runs in the second and third to take back the lead. Senior Kyle Zaslaw led off the second with a single and moved over on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out before coming home on a wild pitch to even the score. Junior Nico Lambros started the second with a walk and stole second before coming home on a Cutler two-out single to give Union the lead.

Union added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings to provide some insurance. A leadoff walk led to another run in the sixth, with Cutler starting off the inning and eventually coming home on a failed pickoff attempt at first base. Junior Caleb Miller was hit by a pitch to start off the ninth and came home on a Swarts RBI single.

Mount St. Mary threatened in the bottom of the eighth after a pair of walks with one out, but senior Alex Erickson came on to get a strikeout and a groundout with two runners in scoring position to escape the jam. Erickson struck out the side in the ninth to finish off his fourth save of the season.

Union will be back in action with a key Liberty League series against Skidmore College this weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Central Park.
