SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union fell in the conference doubleheader to the St. Lawrence Saints Friday afternoon at Alexander Field.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 9, Union 5
First-year Kyla Springer led Union's offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI to help drive in one of the team's five runs. First-year Amy FitzPatrick also went 2-for-4, while junior Haley Gibbons contributed by going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Senior Tatum Perkins knocked in a run, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate. First year Carra Cleaves added an RBI, going 1-for-3, and senior Melody Kappel went 1-for-1 in her only at-bat of the game.
After a scoreless first two innings, St. Lawrence struck first with a run in the top of the third on a single. Union responded in the bottom half with a three-run inning to take a 3–1 lead. Sophomore Sophia Burynski led off with a single, advanced to second on a hit by senior Riley Callahan, and moved to third on a bunt single from sophomore Sam Rose. Cleaves then drove in Burynski with a base hit.
Springer followed with a single to bring home Callahan, and Rose scored on a St. Lawrence error to cap the inning.
Following a quiet fourth, the Saints bounced back with one run in the fifth on a single and added two more in the sixth via a double and a groundout to retake the lead, 4–3.
Union tied the game at 4–4 in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Ellie Wintringer led off with a double, and FitzPatrick followed with a single to move her to third. Gibbons came through in the clutch, singling to score Wintringer.
St. Lawrence responded with authority in the seventh, plating five unanswered runs on three singles and a double to make it 9–4.
The Garnet Chargers managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Kappel reached and scored on a double by Perkins, but Union could not mount a full comeback as the Saints sealed the 9–5 win.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 8, Union 0
First-year Sammy Fenigstein went 2-for-3 at the plate with two hits, while sophomore Sam Rose added a hit, going 1-for-2. Senior Tatum Perkins also contributed offensively, going 1-for-3 with a hit in the second game.
St. Lawrence jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first inning, stringing together a single, a double, and a walk to plate four runs. After a scoreless second inning, the Saints added another run in the third on a groundout. Following quiet fourth and fifth innings, a single in the sixth brought in one more run, and the Saints capped off the game with two additional runs in the seventh to secure an 8-0 win.
Union returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, with a conference doubleheader against Clarkson University. The first pitches are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
