POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team scored the first two goals of the game and allowed Clarkson University to score consecutive goals only once as the Garnet Chargers battled to a 10-7 Liberty League victory on Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.
With the win, Union (9-3, 5-3 Liberty League) moves into a tie for third place in the Liberty League with Ithaca College, a half-game back of Rochester Institute of Technology in second place, with two conference matches remaining.
Senior
Greta Maurer scored a team-leading three goals and sophomore
Gillian Joseph also had three points with a goal and two helpers. Junior
Maddie Doyle recorded a pair of goals and first-year
Maddie Dineen added a goal and an assist in the fourth period to help secure the win.
The teams traded spurts of two goals in less than a minute to start the afternoon, and the game remained tied at three until Doyle's second of the game put Union up to stay with 2:06 left in the opening period. While the visitors did not overwhelm the home team over the final 45 minutes, Union did enough on both ends of the field to come away with the win.
Joseph added the first tally of the second quarter to make the score 5-3 and the teams alternated goals for the next 30 minutes, with a Gabby Cranfield goal getting Clarkson (8-6, 2-5 Liberty League) back within one at 8-7 with 12:10 remaining in the game. But the Union defense locked down after that, forcing turnovers on five of the Golden Knights' next six possessions and junior
Sydney Widlitz coming up with a timely save to keep the home team off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
At the other end, first-year
Stella Del Papa came up with a big goal to push the advantage to two with 9:51 left on the clock, and Dineen followed with a goal of her own just over two minutes later to provide for the final margin.
Union finished the afternoon outshooting Clarkson by a 29-20 margin. Widlitz made four saves and Clarkson's Riley Donovan turned aside nine shots on the day.
The Garnet Chargers will return to action tomorrow with another key conference matchup at St. Lawrence University starting at 2 p.m. in Canton.
