NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Seven different players drove in at least one run as the Union College baseball team finished up non-conference play with a 10-3 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon at Loren Campbell Field.
Union (20-13), which reaches the 20-win plateau for the second straight year under head coach
John Muller, received efforts up and down the lineup in Wednesday's win. Senior
Kyle Zaslaw was the lone Garget Charger with multiple RBIs thanks to a two-run homer and also scored twice to match junior
Caleb Miller for the team lead. Senior
Dan Sheeran went 3-for-4 with an RBI and classmate
Sam Strazza had a pair of hits to go with an RBI and a run scored.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Union struck first in the third with three runs. First-year
Dylan Swarts opened the scoring with an RBI single to plate Miller, and that was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of first-year
AJ Cutler and a run-scoring single by junior
Andrew Keaveney.
New Paltz got two runs back in the bottom of the third, but junior
Jack Klein came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and no outs to limit the damage and keep the visitors ahead by a 3-2 score. Union added to its lead with a run in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Strazza to score Miller, who reached on a two-out error.
The Hawks again got back within a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Union responded with six runs over the final three innings to put the game away. Sheeran's only unsuccessful at-bat of the day still resulted in a run when his grounder scored Cutler to make it a 5-3 score, and Zaslaw followed with a two-run shot to put the visitors up by four after seven. The Garnet Chargers added three more in the ninth, helped by a New Paltz error and a sac fly from junior
Nico Lambros.
Senior
Nick Hiltsley got the start for Union on the hill and tossed a pair of scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen. Klein (1-3) allowed only two hits and struck out two in three scoreless frames, while senior
Aidan McGee ceded only one run on two hits in three innings of work. Junior
Tyler Hill made his Union debut with a hitless ninth.
Union will finish off the regular-season slate with a big three-game series this weekend against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The teams are slated to start the weekend with a single game on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. in Troy.
