Union Blanks RIT in Home Doubleheader Sweep

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - First-year Kyla Springer and sophomore Sam Rose powered the offense, while first-year Carra Cleaves and senior Autumn Duff anchored a stellar defense on the mound, as Union posted two consecutive 4-0 shutouts to sweep RIT in Friday's conference doubleheader at Alexander Field.

Game 1: Union 4 RIT 0

Cleaves delivered a solid performance on the mound, pitching seven scoreless innings, striking out six. Springer led the offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

Union got on the board early, scoring two of their four runs in the first inning. Springer singled to center field to drive in senior Riley Callahan, then came around to score on a double to left by Cleaves, giving the Garnet Chargers a two-run lead over the Tigers.

After the next quiet five innings, Springer capped off Union's scoring in the sixth inning with a two-run homer to left field, bringing home both herself and Callahan.

RIT's runners all grounded out in the top of the seventh to secure the 4-0 win for the Garnet Chargers.

Game 2: Union 4 RIT 0

Duff also delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings to earn the win. Cleaves came in for the final two innings, shutting down the Tigers to help secure the victory. On offense, Rose went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Union struck early again in the first, as Callahan hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Rose. In the second inning, a pair of wild pitches brought home first-year Sammy Fenigstein and Rose to extend the lead.

After four scoreless innings, a single by Rose drove in Fenigstein for Union's final run of the game. Two groundouts and a foul out in the top of the seventh by RIT sealed the 4-0 win for the Garnet Chargers.

Union returns to action on Monday in a non-conference twinbill against SUNY Potsdam at Alexander Field. The first pitches are set for 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
