ITHACA, N.Y. – Ithaca College scored five of the game's first six goals and the Union College men's lacrosse team could never find its way back to even as the Garnet Chargers suffered a 10-5 Liberty League defeat to the Bombers on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
Neither team had a player score more than two goals on the afternoon, with senior
Archie McEvoy netting a pair to pace Union (3-7, 1-2 Liberty League). Senior
Peter Kip, sophomore
Mekhi Taylor and first-year
Bo Bensley all scored as well for the visitors.
Sophomore
John Sula led the defensive effort with four ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers, and junior
Luke Tranter won a career-high 8-of-9 faceoff attempts with three ground balls.
Despite outshooting the Bombers 8-6 in the opening quarter, the Garnet Chargers found themselves down 3-1 after 15 minutes. Taylor evened the score at one with 6:39 to go in the frame, but Ithaca (8-4, 2-1 Liberty League) scored twice in less than two minutes to take a 3-1 lead. The home team added two more to start the second stanza before Union could respond with a Kip tally and Bensley's first collegiate goal 19 seconds apart to get back within two with 5:14 on the clock.
The teams alternated the next four goals over the second and third quarters, with McEvoy's second of the game making the score 7-5 Ithaca with 6:22 left. However, the final three goals of the game all went the way of the Bombers, as Union managed only two on-target shots and had five turnovers over the final 21 minutes.
The Bombers outshot Union by a 37-31 margin, and that edge was exacerbated by the visitors putting only 10 of their attempts on target. Sophomore
Nick Lynch made 11 saves to keep his team within range, while Ithaca's Andrew Minard needed to make only five stops to earn the win.
Union will return to action next Saturday with a noon matchup against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Frank Bailey Field.
