SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team had its six-match winning streak snapped by Williams College to start the day, but the Garnet Chargers came back for a sweep of Hartwick College to close out the 2025 Union/Russell Sage Crosstown Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Viniar Athletic Center.
One day after becoming the 10th Union player to record 1,000 career kills, senior
Shannon McGrath put down 32 kills on Saturday to jump two spots into eighth place on the school's all-time kills ledger. The senior hit .348 over six sets and also chipped in 15 digs to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She was joined in All-Tournament honors by classmate
Georgia Pool, who led the team with 22 digs on the day.
Williams 3, Union 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18)
Union ran into a hot-hitting Williams team on Saturday, as the Ephs hit .326 with 42 kills and only 12 errors. McGrath led all players with 14 kills and first-year
Shea Ringel chipped in 10, while sophomore
Allie Kronenberg dished out 26 assists and junior
Maddie McCarron had a team-best three blocks.
The Garnet Chargers bounced back from an early deficit to take a 15-13 lead midway through the opening frame, but the Ephs responded with a 12-4 run to end the set and take the lead. Union had its best hitting percentage (.212) in the second set, but unfortunately so did Williams, who hit .448 with 15 kills to take a 2-0 edge. The Ephs started the third set on an 8-3 run and never allowed the home team to get back to even on the way to the sweep.
Union 3, Hartwick 0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-16)
McGrath again led all players with 18 kills in the second match of the day, hitting .406 and just missing a double-double with nine digs. Ringel and sophomore
Georgia Pinciaro both had seven kills as well in the three-set win.
Union never trailed in any of the three sets against the Hawks, getting off to strong starts in each frame. The opening frame was the most highly contested, with Hartwick tying the score twice and remaining close until a 5-1 mini-run gave the home team some breathing room. Union started strong in the second stanza, taking an early 15-5 lead, but the Hawks battled back to get within two at 19-17. However, the Garnet Chargers closed on a 6-2 stretch to take a 2-0 lead.
A 10-1 run midway through the third set broke open a close set and allowed the home team to cruise to the sweep.
Union will return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at Utica University.
