Greco Scores Twice to Lead Field Hockey Past #22 Ithaca 2-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior Maddie Greco scored two goals and senior Sophie Brady made two saves to become the program's all-time wins leader as the Union College field hockey team came back to knock off #22 Ithaca College by a 2-1 score in the teams' Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Greco scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season to move her to 45 goals and 98 points for her career, just one goal and two points back of tying the program record. Brady, meanwhile, came into the afternoon tied with Jen Lyon '90 on the career wins list and now holds the record all to herself after earning her third win of the year and 31st of her career.

The opening period was a back-and-forth defensive struggle that featured only one shot, but that shot came off the stick of Ithaca's Audrey McMahon, and that shot beat Brady with 3:10 to go in the frame to put the visitors ahead.

The second stanza had a relative explosion of offensive chances, with the teams combining for five shots. Union had four of the five opportunities on goal, but four stops by Maeve Clark kept Union off the board and Ithaca in front headed into the half.

The teams again settled into a defensive battle in the second stanza, with both teams taking just two on-target shots. The difference in the game was that Brady stopped both shots she faced and Greco put both chances past Clark as the Garnet Chargers pulled out the win. Greco evened the score in the 39th minute, when her shot caromed off Clark and into the net to tie the score. The home team took the lead with 8:15 left in the fourth when Greco tipped home a corner shot by senior Megan Dorsey.

Union finished the game with a 6-4 edge in shots and Ithaca held the advantage in penalty corners by the same margin.

The Garnet Chargers will return to non-conference play on Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at SUNY New Paltz.
