Women's Hockey Skates to 2-0 Victory Over Franklin Pierce

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year Karianne Engelbert and senior Greta Kropp both scored their first goals of the season, while first-year goaltender Emma Rhéaume turned aside 19 shots to backstop the Union College women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Center.

The Garnet Chargers wasted no time getting on the board just one minute into play. First-year defender Isabel Powers sent the puck up to sophomore Maddie Leaney, who threaded a pass into the slot for Engelbert, and she fired a shot into the top-left corner.

Kropp doubled the lead 12 minutes later, capitalizing on a fortunate bounce. A wide-angle shot ricocheted off the right-side boards and skipped to the opposite side, where Kropp buried it into the left corner of the net.

Union controlled much of the play in the final two periods, outshooting the Ravens 24-14 overall and generated two power-play chances, but were unable to extend the lead.

Rhéaume's 19-save performance secured both her first collegiate shutout and first win. Together with junior netminder Monja Wagner's shutout on Friday, the pair made program history, marking the first time Union has recorded back-to-back shutouts in consecutive games.

Union continues non-conference action next weekend, hosting Hockey East foe Merrimack College in a two-game series. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday and 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
