SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College men's soccer team edged King's College in a 2-1 victory Tuesday evening at College Park Field.
Union nearly broke through six minutes into the first half with a point-blank shot from inside the 18-yard box. Eight minutes later, the Garnet Chargers capitalized when junior Christian O'Hara delivered a cross that first-year Kofi Sarfoh headed into the back of the net for the opening goal.
Union kept the pressure on with a corner at the 25-minute mark and came close on multiple chances, including a strike off the crossbar and a pair of saves by the Monarchs' keeper. On the other end, Union senior goalkeeper Jacob Perry preserved the 1-0 lead with a leaping stop on a free kick and another strong save minutes later.
The Garnet Chargers opened the second half with another shot off the crossbar before King's drew level with a strike into the top-right corner. Perry responded with back-to-back saves midway through the half and denied a point-blank effort in the 71st minute to keep the game tied.
Union had a late chance turned aside, but with just over three minutes remaining, pressure forced an own goal that secured a 2-1 victory for the Garnet Chargers.
Union outshot King's by a narrow 13-12 margin, as Perry recorded five saves while Ben Van Valkenburg turned aside six for the Monarchs.
The Garnet Chargers continue Liberty League play Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer. Kick off is set for 2:00 pm.
