SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite 328 yards through the air from senior
Patch Flanagan, the Union College football team fell to #4/5 Susquehanna University by a 33-14 score in both teams' 2025 season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
Flanagan ended the day 18-for-36 for 328 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. His two longest completions of the day resulted in touchdowns for senior
Dan Quinn, who had the best day of his career with seven catches for 187 yards and two scores. Quinn is the first Union receiver since 2021 to break 150 receiving yards in a game.
Defensively, junior
Dwayne Hinds recorded a game-high 16 tackles, while juniors
Jordan Black and
Daniel O'Leary both were in double figures as well with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. O'Leary also led the team with 3.5 tackles for loss and sophomore
Peter Nizolek had the team's lone sack of the day.
Susquehanna reached the end zone on the game's first drive before both teams punted on their next possessions, with Josh Ehrlich pinning Union at the one-yard line with a 34-yard punt. Backed up into their own end zone, it took Union only one record-breaking play to go 99 yards, as Flanagan found Quinn deep down the right sideline and he outraced a defender to the endzone for the score. The play far surpassed the previous program record for longest touchdown catch, first set by an 86-yard pass from Dan Stewart '85 to Frank Kraft '84 against Trinity (Conn.) College in 1982. The previous record for longest play overall was a 96-yard touchdown run by George Beebe '03 in 2000 against the University of Rochester.
The River Hawks tacked on the final 13 points of the opening half to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room, as the Garnet Chargers' next three possessions resulted in two punts and an interception.
The visitors couldn't get any momentum going offensively to start the second half, totaling just 10 yards on their next four drives. Union did put together a solid 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, with Flanagan and Quinn hooking up three times for 50 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown strike. The team's last two drives resulted in a turnover on downs and a fumble to end the afternoon.
Union finished the day with 348 yards of total offense, and the team's average of 6.2 yards per play bettered Susquehanna' average of 5.6. Turnovers did not help the team's cause, with two interceptions and one fumble short-circuiting drives, as well as a 2-for-12 effort on third downs.
Union's challenging start to the season will continue next Saturday with a road matchup at SUNY Cortland beginning at noon.
