SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior
Hannah Sams tied the score in the 77th minute and classmate
Maya Koster kept the Garnet Chargers in the match with eight saves as the Union College women's soccer team drew with Babson College, 1-1, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
Despite being outshot by a 16-11 margin (9-4 shots on goal), Union (1-1-1) was able to stay close thanks to Koster, who denied the last eight on-target shots she faced after Josie Lee scored the opening goal of the game in the sixth minute for Babson (0-0-2).
With the match still within reach for Union, Sams found the equalizer in the 77th minute, when she intercepted a pass about 40 yards from goal and fired a strike over the outstretched keeper and under the bar for her first goal of the season.
Koster added two more saves after Sams' tally to keep the match tied and give Union a draw. Callahan Cottone made three saves in goal for the Beavers.
Sams tied for the team lead in shots with two, joined by senior
Vanessa Jorgensen and first-year
Kayla Coviello.
Union will venture off campus for its first road game of the season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Western New England University.
