ALBANY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team earned its second straight Mayor's Cup victory with a 4–3 win Saturday afternoon at MVP Arena.
Union's four goals marked the most scored by any team in the history of the Women's Mayors' Cup, while the seven combined goals were also the most in the event's history.
Sophomore
Jill Willis opened the scoring with an assist from classmate
Peyton O'Neill. O'Neill then notched her first collegiate goal, assisted by junior
Maddie Leaney and sophomore
Karianne Engelbert, to close out the first period. Junior
Mikayla Blomquist added a goal in the second period with help from sophomore
Hayley Kelleher. Engelbert capped the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal on the power play, assisted by senior captain
Stephanie Bourque to end the middle frame. Bourque's assist tied her with Elise Nichols '07 for most career points in the Division I era with 68.
Willis opened the game's scoring at the 2:40 mark of the first period after O'Neill's initial shot hit the backboards and caromed to the right side of the net, where Willis banked it off Keating and into the net. Rensselaer tied the game one minute later as Naomi Forand backhanded a shot from the slot over Union's goaltender.
Rensselaer took a brief lead just under five minutes later on the power play when
Kendal Davidson rifled a wrist shot from the right point over Union's goaltender's shoulder. Union responded with five minutes remaining in the period as O'Neill fired a shot from the top of the left circle into the back of the net to knot the game at two. Union earned its first power-play opportunity late in the period but was unable to convert before the first intermission.
The second period began four-on-four after penalties were assessed to Union for interference and Rensselaer for slashing, though neither team was able to capitalize. Union later earned another power-play opportunity midway through the period but came up empty.
However, Blomquist put Union ahead with five minutes remaining in the middle frame, firing a shot from the right circle over Rensselaer's goaltender's left shoulder. Engelbert, then, extended the lead to 4–2 with 31 seconds left in the period, scoring off a rebound from Bourque on the power play.
Union opened the third period shorthanded but successfully killed the penalty. Davidson scored her second goal of the night late in the period on a six-on-five power play after Rensselaer pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, but Union held on for the victory.
Junior goaltender
Monja Wagner made 22 saves in the win.
Union returns to action next weekend, hosting Brown University on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and #10 Yale University on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at M&T Bank Center.
