Men's Soccer Shuts Out RIT, 3-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team picked up their second victory of the year in Liberty League play and jumped into fourth place in the conference standings with a 3-0 shutout victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
Sophomore Arturo Pena Fulcar scored his first collegiate goal to get the Garnet Chargers on the board, while first-year Joseph Carofano and senior Luke Ingber added goals in the second half to secure the win in a defensively driven contest.

Union (8-5-1, 2-2-0 Liberty League) took the lead in the 31st minute when Pena Fulcar found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal, sending the Garnet Chargers into halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Off a Union corner kick, the sophomore corralled a clearing header inside the box and flipped the ball into the top-right corner for the eventual game-winner.
RIT continued to apply pressure in the second half, leading Union in shots 6-5, while the Garnet Chargers held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Dmitri Wild-Arons came up big in net, making three key saves to help preserve Union's lead.

Carofano extended the lead in the 57th minute with a high-right finish off an assist from sophomore Gavin Blake, as Union took advantage of a turnover inside the penalty box. Ingber added an insurance goal in the 65th minute, scoring his first goal of the season off a loose ball at the top of the box with a one-touch strike that put Union ahead 3-0.
Despite RIT's offensive pressure, Union's defense remained strong throughout the match. Wild-Arons and the back line held firm to secure the shutout victory, marking Wild-Arons' first clean sheet of the season with a four-save effort.

Union will return to action Wednesday when the Garnet Chargers travel to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar College at 3:30 p.m. as Liberty League play continues.
