Volleyball Falls in Five to Vassar

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team fell 3-2 against Vassar College inside Viniar Athletic Center on Wednesday night.

The outcome of the match against Vassar (11-12, 5-2 LIberty League) determined the third seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, and Union (17-8, 4-3 Liberty League) fell to fourth. The Garnet Chargers will host a playoff game against the fifth seed on Tuesday, Nov. 10 with the full championship bracket forthcoming following the conclusion of the league schedule on Saturday.

The Garnet Chargers coasted to a pair of quick set victories on Wednesday night, taking down Vassar 25-16 and 25-19 to start. Union hit .262 through the first two sets with 27 kills to Vassar's 20. Junior Georgia Pinciaro was flawless to help Union go up 2-0, putting down six kills on her first six swings. Her classmate Kayla Martinez Cartagena had a particularly strong first set to put Union on course, hitting .429 with eight kills in the opener.

The two sides battled through the early going of the third set as Union looked to put the Brewers away in short order. There were five tie scores and three lead changes in the third before Vassar got in front for good with a six-point rally and took an 18-9 lead.

Union was hanging on in the fourth set and came up with a single-set match-high 23 digs in the frame, but Vassar never trailed and forced a tiebreaker, 25-21.

Union led on four separate occasions in the fifth, but after senior Maddie McCarron put the home team up 9-8, the Brewers went on a 7-1 run to complete their comeback. Vassar had three kills and benefited from four Union attack errors on the run.

Elena Feuer had seven block assists and a block solo for Vassar in the match, leading all players. McCarron put up a similarly valiant effort on the other side of the net with six block assists, and Pinciaro finished with a .357 percentage with 13 kills. Junior Allie Kronenberg got six kills past Vassar, paired with a single-match career-best 22 digs.

Union closes out conference play on Saturday, Oct. 31 against St. Lawrence at 11:30 a.m. then begins a tough non-conference slate to finish out the regular season, beginning with Springfield at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
