SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior Connor Smith of the men's hockey team and senior Hannah Sams of the women's soccer team have been named the Highmark Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 4.

Smith helped Union to a season-opening 4-2 win over Army West Point on Saturday, scoring the game-tying goal on the power play in the second period and also causing a turnover at center ice that he turned into an empty-net goal with 1:27 left in the game to secure the victory. Smith has now compiled four goals in three games against Army (0-1), which also means he has scored a goal in all three of Union's last three season-opening games. 

Sams helped Union to a 2-0 week last week, helping to push the pace in the midfield. The senior took a team-high 10 shots, including scoring the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute of a key 1-0 win at Rensselaer on Saturday. She single-handedly matched the opposition's shot attempts as Union outshot their opponents by a 41-10 margin over the four halves in the wins over Bard (2-0) and RPI to extend its shutout streak to over 346 minutes spanning three-plus matches.
