MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – NFHCA #12 Wesleyan University scored four times in the first quarter and never looked back in a 7-1 victory over Union College in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Wednesday evening at Hicks Field.
Union (7-4) played Wesleyan (6-3) evenly in the second and fourth quarters, but the Cardinals outscored 6-0 in the first and third frames to cruise to the win. Leila Feldman had three goals to lead the home team, while senior
Amy Vytopilova scored the lone goal of the game for the visitors.
Wesleyan scored on its first shot of the game and kept Union without an attempt for the first 10-plus minutes of the contest, after which time the Cardinals had already scored four times to take an insurmountable lead.
Shots were 2-2 during a scoreless second stanza, and Wesleyan put home two of its four shots in the third quarter. Vytopilova broke up the shutout bid 1:20 into the fourth frame with her fifth goal of the season off a pass from junior
Rowan Dapson, before the home team capped the scoring with 5:21 remaining.
Wesleyan ended the evening with a 19-8 edge in shots and took 12 penalty corners to Union's five. Union used all three goalies on the evening, with first-year
Ellie Skolnekovich and junior
Tess Parker both making three saves and senior
Marion Stuntz stopping one shot.
Union will look to shake off the loss on Saturday, when the Garnet Chargers host Senior Day before a big Capital Region clash with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
