CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore
Gavin Blake recorded his first collegiate multi-goal game to lead the Union College men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over SUNY Canton in the team's non-conference finale on Tuesday evening at the SUNY Canton Turf Field.
Blake had a pair of goals while junior
Eamonn Kelley and first-year
Josiah Blake both scored as well for Union (7-5-1), which outshot SUNY Canton (1-9-2) by a 20-4 margin and did not allow a shot on goal during the run of play.
The visitors needed less than four minutes to get on the scoreboard on their second shot of the night. Junior
Logan Weitzmann took the ball down the right sideline and put a cross into the box that went by multiple players before finding its way to Kelley at the back post for the tap in, Kelley's fourth goal of the season.
Gavin Blake doubled the lead in the 21st minute with his first of the evening. He attempted a give-and-go with sophomore
Shane Crowley 25 yards from goal, but while the return pass was blocked it went right back to the foot of the sophomore, who let loose a first-touch shot from 20 yards out that skidded past the keeper at the right post.
Blake struck again in the 35th minute after he was on the receiving end of a long ball by junior
London Abbott that got past the defense at the top of the 18-yard box for Blake to put away with the left foot.
Canton broke up the shutout in the 54th minute when a seemingly inadvertent collision at the top of the box resulted in a penalty kick awarded to the Roos that Gavin Barth put home. The Garnet Chargers restored their three-goal advantage with 16:50 remaining in the match, when sophomore
Diogo Charraz sent a ball forward that
Josiah Blake tapped past the onrushing goalie and deposited into an empty net for his fifth goal of the season.
First-year
Michael Karcher did not need to make a save in order to earn the victory in goal for Union, while Braydn Bovee and Jason Vela both conceded two goals for the home team.
Union will play the first of six straight Liberty League games to conclude the regular season on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. matchup against Rochester Institute of Technology at College Park Field.
