Volleyball Races Past SUNY Delhi

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team hit .375 in its 3-0 victory over SUNY Delhi on Wednesday evening inside Viniar Athletic Center.

The Garnet Chargers (11-6) began the match with a .722 attack percentage in the first set against the Broncos (1-16), featuring six kills from junior Kayla Martinez Cartagena. She had three straight kills during a 7-0 rally to start the evening, putting her squad well on its way to a 25-7 edge in the opener.

Martinez Cartagena only had two errors on the night, finishing with 12 winners on 20 swings. Her classmate Georgia Pinciaro also had double-digit kills, and senior Samantha Janker, first-year Johanna Melhorn, and sophomore Shea Ringel all had multiple kills without an error. Those three combined for eight kills on 12 attempts.

The Broncos kept things closer in the second and only trailed 16-13 midway through the action. But with senior Graciela Escobar at the service line, Union went on a five-point run and pulled away from the visitors.

Union had seven service aces in the second set and bookended the third set with a pair of aces to open play and end the match. Senior Sydney Scanlon had the first two aces of the third set, and junior Madelyn Frederick had the final two as Union swept SUNY Delhi for the second straight time in the all-time series.

After junior Allie Kronenberg recorded seven assists in the first, Scanlon stepped in and handed out 20 assists in the final two frames. She also led the way defensively with a single-match season-high 10 digs. Pinciaro and Janker both notched block solos, and first-year Alexandra Googel got in on her first career block assist as Union accumulated five total blocks overall.

The Garnet Chargers hit a single-match season-best .375 and have been over .370 in the last two matches. It is the first time Union has hit .350 or better in back-to-back matches since Oct. 2, 2015. Union hit .365 and .382 in a tri-match against Morrisville and Hartwick on that date 11 years ago.

Union continues its homestand with a return to Liberty League action on Friday. Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. against Skidmore.
