Duplantie and Bourque Break Records in Union’s Quarterfinal Loss to #8 Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – First-year Megan Duplantie broke the rookie single-season points record by tallying her 25th point of the season, while senior captain Stephanie Bourque set a new ironwoman streak by playing in her 141st career game in Union Women's Hockey team's 4–2 loss to #8 (first-seeded) Yale in Game 1 of the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Ingalls Rink.

Duplantie evened the score at 1–1 in the second period off a feed from sophomore Karianne Engelbert. Junior Emma Fulawka buried another equalizer in the third period to make it 2–2, with senior Mallory Mauracher picking up the assist.

Union began the first period shorthanded but came up with a key penalty kill to keep the game even. Later, a Union hooking call on a Yale breakaway sent Carina DiAntonio to the penalty shot, which she converted to give the Bulldogs a 1–0 lead after the first period.

Just three minutes into the middle stanza, Duplantie netted Union's first game-tying goal of the night. Engelbert fed the puck from the far-right hashes to the top of the crease, where Duplantie chipped it over Yale's goaltender to even the score at one.

Exactly four minutes later, however, Yale retook the lead. Gracie Gilkyson fired a shot from the top of the blue line that took an odd bounce and slipped into the back of Union's net.

In the final frame, Fulawka tied the game once again at two. She carried the puck from below the goal line to the side of the net and, on her second attempt, was able to squeak it past Yale's goaltender.

However, a five-minute major penalty with 12 minutes remaining allowed Yale to score the eventual game-winning goal. Stephanie Stainton ripped a shot from the left circle into the back of the net, giving the Bulldogs a 3–2 lead.

Union earned a power-play opportunity following the goal and generated a few quality scoring chances but could not convert.

Just 17 seconds after the power play expired, with Union still in the offensive zone, Stainton blocked a shot that allowed DiAntonio to break away. She deked Union's goaltender and extended the lead to 4–2 with an insurance goal.

Union pulled first-year goaltender Emma Rhéaume after matching roughing penalties were assessed. With the extra attacker, the Garnet Chargers skated five-on-four for nearly the remainder of the game in search of two goals to force overtime but came up short. Rhéaume finished the game with 38 saves.

Women's hockey continues the best-of-three quarterfinal series on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop against the Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink. If a third game, if necessary, will be played Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
