SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team saw its comeback effort come up a few points short on Friday afternoon, as the Garnet Chargers fell to Division II Saint Michael's College by a 4-3 score at Sportime Capital Region.
Sophomore
Arhan Gupta was the lone double winner for Union on the day, earning victories in both singles and doubles play. Union (4-2) won three singles matches to make the contest close, but the home team came just short of a comeback win.
Saint Michael's (6-4) earned the doubles point to start the day, winning by a 6-4 margin at the second flight after the teams split first and third doubles by the same 6-1 score.
A 7-5, 6-0 win by junior
Solen Bellemare over Viktor Boban temporarily evened the score at one before the Purple Knights earned wins at third and first singles to move one point away from victory.
Gupta kept Union alive with a win at the fourth flight, besting Jamie Macpherson in a supertiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, (10-8), but Saint Michael's clinched the win with a supertiebreaker win of its own at fifth singles. Sophomore
Vivaan Gupta finished the day by defeating Ferm Koppelmans, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in their sixth-singles matchup.
Union will take a few weeks off from competition before heading down south for five Spring Break matches in Orlando, beginning on March 22 against Luther College.
