Baseball Drops Home Opener to Castleton, 11-7

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Four Union College baseball team players had multiple hits during the Garnet Chargers' 11-7 home-opener loss to VTSU Castleton Wednesday afternoon at Central Park "A" Diamond.

One of those hitters with multiple hits, first-year Evan Lagemann, opened the scoring for Union in the first on a bases-clearing double with two outs. Lagemann knocked in another run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring senior Andrew Keaveney. Union's first baseman increased his average to .455 by the end of the game after totaling three base knocks.

Trey LaVigne homered to open the scoring in the Spartans' half of the fourth, and then three of their next four runs crossed home plate unearned after four Union errors. After taking the lead thanks to Union's messy fourth inning, the Spartans never relinquished the lead, tacking on five more runs the rest of the way.

Sophomore Dylan Swarts hit Union's first four-bagger at their home field this season with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth. Keaveney was then hit by a pitch, reaching base for a fourth time and bringing up senior Cooper Ames. However, Union could not bring the game-tying run to the plate and dropped their fourth straight game.

The Garnet Chargers altered their upcoming weekend plans and will head down the Hudson River to play SUNY Purchase at their home field. However, Union will be the home team in Purchase, N.Y. when the doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 begins at 11:30 a.m.
