Men's Lacrosse Succumbs in Final Minute to Trinity, 11-10

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Trinity (Conn.) College scored five of the game's last six goals to post a 11-10 comeback victory over Union College in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Sophomore Brendan Powers and first-year Garrett Salit both scored two goals with one assist for a team-leading three points, joined by senior Walker Popko with a goal and two helpers. Five other Garnet Chargers had one goal apiece as well.

Salit scored on Union's first possession of the game, and the home team led 3-1 after one frame after a man-up goal from first-year Hayden Caulkins and a tally by junior Mekhi Taylor. Trinity scored three of the second stanza's first four goals to tie the game, but goals from Powers and senior Matt McKenzie gave the home team a 6-4 edge headed into halftime.

The Bantams held a 14-6 advantage in shots in the third period, but four saves by junior Nick Lynch helped Union play the period even to stay ahead. The teams traded goals in the frame, with Powers and Salit both scoring for a second time each to put the score at 8-6 after 45 minutes.

Sophomore Mac McGovern starred the fourth quarter with a long-range missile to give Union its largest lead of the day at 9-6, but the rest of the period belonged to the Bantams. Trinity got back within two less than 90 seconds later and made it a one-goal game with 9:27 remaining. Senior Emmett Lyne regained the two-goal edge with his 11th goal of the year on the next possession, but that was Union's last on-target shot until the final second of the game.

After Trinity got back within a goal with 7:59 left, the teams traded turnovers until the Bantams evened the score with 3:09 on the clock. Union won the subsequent faceoff and took three shots on the next possession, but could not find the net and the score remained tied. The Bantams got the ball back and took their first lead of the game with 25 seconds left on a Bo Page tally. The Garnet Chargers forced a turnover off the faceoff to give themselves one last chance, but a Taylor shot at the buzzer was stopped by Davis Ike to seal the win.

Lynch kept Union in front by making 16 saves on the afternoon, including 10 in the first half, while Ike had nine stops for Trinity. Union went 2-for-3 on the player advantage on the day, but Trinity used a 15-9 edge at the faceoff dot to control much of the final frame.

Union will be back on the field on Saturday, hosting #7 Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
