Joseph Reaches 100 Goals But Union Falls to #22 Colorado College in 2OT

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Gillian Joseph became the 11th player in program history to record 100 career goals and tied for the game high with five points, but #22 Colorado College scored the final five goals of the game – including the game-winner 2:58 into the second overtime – to escape with a 12-11 (2OT) win over Union College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Joseph tied the game-high with four goals and five points to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and senior Christina Guanci added four goals as well for the home team. Junior Anna Dembowski led the defensive effort with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while junior Hannah Compa added a game-high eight draw controls.

Joseph's fourth goal of the game with 8:57 left in the fourth quarter capped a three-goal run and matched the largest lead of the game for Union (1-3) at 11-7. That shot, however, was Union's last on-target attempt of the game, as the home team managed only three off-target shots for the remainder of the fourth quarter and did not get a shot off in either overtime frame.

Colorado College (4-2) responded to Joseph's tally with a goal 37 seconds later to get within three, and the visitors followed up two Union turnovers with two goals in less than a minute to get back within one at 11-10 with 3:28 on the clock. The Tigers controlled the subsequent draw and Union played excellent defense for almost the entire 90 seconds on the shot clock before Sofia Mancino just beat the buzzer and tied the game with 1:25 remaining. Union had the final possession of regulation, but could not find the net.

Neither team got off a shot during the first five-minute overtime period, with the teams combining for five turnovers to keep the game going. The Garnet Chargers got the first possession of the second overtime but again gave the ball back to the Tigers. Senior Sydney Widlitz made a huge save on a free-position attempt to temporarily stay alive, but Meghan Collins picked up the loose ball and shoveled it into the net for the game-winner seconds later.

After Colorado College scored the first goal of the game, Union rattled off six of the next seven tallies to take a 6-2 lead at the midway point of the second stanza. Joseph and Guanci combined for five of the six goals, with Joseph's third tally of the evening giving her an even 100 for her career. Two goals by Guanci helped Union play the third quarter even, and Union scored three straight early in the fourth to take a seemingly comfortable four-goal lead in the fourth before the Tigers mounted their comeback.

The visitors ended the evening with a slight 31-27 edge in shots. Widlitz made nine saves in goal for Union to give her 396 for her career, moving into second place on the school's all-time list, and also limited CC to a 3-of-9 effort from the eight-meter arc. Cassidy Schnaufer made five saves for Colorado College and kept Union off the board on all four free-position attempts.

Union will continue a busy Spring Break long weekend on Saturday with the team's Liberty League opener against Skidmore College beginning at 1 p.m. in Schenectady.
