Baseball Drops Extra-Inning Matchup With St. Olaf

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Union College baseball team lost an extra-inning affair against St. Olaf College as the Oles walked it off 6-5 over the Garnet Chargers at Chain of Lakes Park Sunday afternoon.

Senior Caleb Miller slashed out his fifth multi-hit game of the season while batting leadoff, and sophomore Dylan Swarts pitched 2.2 innings in relief without allowing an earned run. However, the Oles (5-10) took advantage of an error in extras with Swarts on the bump to earn the one-run victory against Union (4-7).

First-year Seamus Condon's and sophomore Benjamin Raphael's back-to-back RBI hits opened the scoring in the top of the second. Miller put Union up 3-0 with a sacrifice fly two batters later, setting up senior Alex Oppenheimer to pitch most of his six-inning outing with a lead.

Oppenheimer struck out six Oles during his first start of the season, marking his most Ks since fanning eight against SUNY Old Westbury on March 3, 2024.

The right-handed senior recorded his fourth strikeout of the game to retire the side in a tumultuous bottom of the fifth. Mason Buck put St. Olaf in the lead during that four-run, five hit frame with a three-run homer to left. Oppenheimer came back out and worked a clean bottom of the sixth, striking out two.

Senior Andrew Keaveny got Oppenheimer off the hook for the loss in the next half inning, delivering a game-tying single. Union's comeback was set up by a leadoff walk from first-year Jack McKillop and Miller's second double of the game.

Swarts kept his squad in the game after moving to the mound from shortstop in the eighth inning. Through his first two innings of action, he only allowed one hit and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior Nico Lambros reached second base representing the go-ahead run after a walk in the 10th inning, but the Garnet Chargers were unable to get him across home plate and flew out twice, ending the threat.

Cole Pleimann led off St. Olaf's half of the 10th with a single. Swarts induced a ground ball to the next Oles hitter, but Kanen Kreafle reached after an error from Union's third baseman. Swarts retired the next two batters he faced, meaning St Olaf's walkoff run crossed home plate unearned. Regardless, Union suffered its third consecutive loss in Florida and will look to get in the win column during its Spring Break trip on Monday, March 23 at 10 a.m. against Knox College.
