ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Luther College on the first day of its annual Spring Break trip on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
Union (4-3) went to a supertiebreaker in five of the six singles matches, but the Garnet Chargers could solve the Continentals in any of the breakers to drop their third straight match.
Luther (9-2) started the day by winning all three doubles matches, with Union coming closest at the top flight where sophomores
Arhan Gupta and
Jesus Sosa fell by a 6-4 margin to Abhay Chhabra and Joao Benvenutti.
The Norse took a 2-0 lead with a win at third singles, and the final five matches all were decided by three points or fewer in supertiebreakers. Union took the first set in two of the five contests while coming back to force a breaker with second-set wins in three others. Gupta came closest to a win at fourth singles, posting a 6-0 second-set win and then holding an 8-7 edge in the breaker before Gerardo Ramirez Mainou took the final three points to escape with the victory.
Union will have a busy day tomorrow, playing a pair of matches against Huntington College at noon and Hamilton College at 3:30 p.m.
