Softball Tops Oberlin, Falls to Luther

CLERMONT, Fla - The Union College Softball team earned a win and suffered a loss on Wednesday, defeating Oberlin 7–4 before dropping a 21–0 decision to Luther on day four of the NTC Spring Games at Hancock Park. 

GAME 1: Union 7, Oberlin 4

Junior Sam Rose led the offense for the second time in the Spring Games, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored in game one. Sophomore Carra Cleaves also had a strong performance, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Junior Sophia Burnyski went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while first-year Sarah Geackel added an RBI and a run of her own. Sophomore Kyla Springer recorded two hits and drove in a run, and first-year Ashley Callery also contributed an RBI. Sophomore Amy FitzPatrick chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

Oberlin got on the board in the top of the first on a single by Connor Fogarty that brought in Ajali Singh. Singh later added another run in the third on an error to make it 2–0.

Union responded in the bottom of the third, tying the game as Geackel singled to score Burnyski, followed by a Cleaves double that brought Geackel home.

Oberlin regained the lead in the fourth. Aofie Shen hit a sacrifice fly to score Caroline Sniffen, and a groundout by Hailey Alspach allowed Maya Means to cross the plate, extending the lead to 4–2.

Union answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Burnyski doubled to score FitzPatrick, and in the fifth, Callery grounded out to bring in Rose. Gibbons later reached on an error at first base, allowing Cleaves and junior Maddie Ewald to score.

Cleaves struck out three batters, and Union's defense handled the rest over the final two innings to secure the 7–4 win.

GAME 2: Luther 21, Union 0

Luther got off to a strong start in the first inning taking a 5-0 lead in game two. The Norse scored five runs on a string of hits, including a two-RBI triple and multiple doubles to quickly take control.

Luther continued to build their lead in the second inning, adding seven more runs. The inning was highlighted by extra-base hits and taking advantage of errors and a passed ball.

In the fourth inning, Luther tacked on three more runs, including a triple and a single to drive in runs.

The Norse closed out the scoring in the fifth, adding six runs behind several singles and a bases-loaded walk to secure the 21-0 victory over Union.

The Garnet Chargers will close out the Spring Games on Thursday, facing North Central at 10:00 a.m., followed by Lawrence University at 12:15 p.m.
