Third-Quarter Woes Sink Men's Lacrosse at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College outscored Union College by an 8-1 margin in the decisive third quarter as the Ephs came back to knock off the Garnet Chargers by a 10-8 score in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Farley-Lamb Field.

Senior Emmett Lyne tied for the game-high with three goals to pace Union (0-5), and sophomore Brendan Powers tied Lyne and two others for the game-high in points with two goals and an assist. Senior John Sula (four ground balls, three caused turnovers) and junior Kyle Goodwin (five ground balls, two caused turnovers) led the defensive effort for the visitors.

As has been the pattern in many games this season, the Garnet Chargers got off to an excellent start on Wednesday evening, scoring six of the game's first seven goals to take a 6-1 lead into halftime. Junior Nick Lynch made five saves and Union got goals from Lyne and sophomore Mac McGovern to take a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. It was more of the same in the second stanza, as back-to-back man-up goals from Lyne were followed later in the frame by goals from Powers and junior Mekhi Taylor to put the visitors up by five at the half.

Union outshot Williams by a 22-18 margin after 30 minutes and also had a large 28-15 edge in ground balls.

The tide turned dramatically in the third quarter, however, as Williams outshot Union by a 17-3 margin and had a 19-4 edge in ground balls while scoring eight of the period's nine goals. The Ephs scored the first six goals of the frame to take its first lead at 7-6 with 6:24 left, and the home team followed a Powers goal with two more of their own to bring a 9-7 advantage into the final frame.

Lynch and Williams counterpart Charlie Medd allowed only one goal apiece in the fourth quarter, as Union could not get back to even after a goal by senior Walker Popko made it a one-goal game with 9:55 left. Medd made three saves and Union turned the ball over three times over the final nine minutes, and the Ephs scored an insurance tally with 4:01 left to seal the victory.

Lynch ended the night with 12 saves for Union and Medd finished with 11 stops for Williams. The Ephs posted a 45-35 edge in shots and also held a commanding 16-6 edge in faceoff wins on the day.

Union will look to get in the win column on Saturday when the Garnet Chargers host Muhlenberg College in a non-conference matchup beginning at 3 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
