Baseball Sweeps 2026 Debut Against Stockton

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – First-year Jack McKillop delivered a walkoff sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to drive in his classmate Evan Lagemann, capping off the Union College baseball team's sweep of Stockton University at Diamond Nation on Friday by scores of 14-5 and 7-6.

McKillop had three hits during Union's season-opening doubleheader, including leading off the second game of the day with his first collegiate home run. First-year Seamus Condon and Lagemann also had multi-hit performances during the 7-6 victory. Lagemann was hit by a pitch three times in the game while senior Andrew Keaveney drew a trio of walks.

Game 1: Union 14, Stockton 5

Setting the stage for the tightly contested finale of the twin bill, Union (2-0) thumped Stockton (0-2) in the opener 14-5, marking its most runs in a season debut since hanging 18 on Fontbonne University at the outset of the 2017 season.

Senior Caleb Miller left his mark on Game 1 early, hitting two doubles, driving in the game's first two runs, and throwing out a pair of runners all before the third inning.

The Garnet Chargers touched up Stockton's pitching for six runs on nine hits before the Ospreys scratched any runs across. Stockton scored twice in the top of the sixth, but Union responded with eight more runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 14-2.

Nine batters reached safely for the Garnet Chargers in their half of the sixth with four hits, four walks, and a hit-by-pitch from sophomore Dylan Swarts. Miller tallied his fourth hit and RBI of the game as Union put up another crooked number. The catcher's 4-5 performance marked the fourth four-hit game of his career.

Lagemann also had multiple hits in Union's blowout win to start the season, earning his first collegiate hit with an RBI single in the third.

First-year Lucas Miller closed out the game on the mound in relief of juniors Jacob Skarlis and Garrick Godin. Skarlis earned the win with four innings of shutout ball as the starter in the seven-inning contest, striking out four Ospreys.

Game 2: Union 7, Stockton 6 (10 innings)

In Game 2, the Ospreys erased Union's early lead after McKillop's leadoff homer and took their first lead of the day with a three-run fourth.

Swarts led off the fifth with a hit-by-pitch followed by one of Keaveny's three walks. Those two free passes turned into game-tying runs when senior Cooper Ames drove them in with his fourth career triple.

Swarts helped senior Jack Klein keep the game tied 6-6 despite a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Klein induced a ground ball off the bat of Evan Palmer up the middle, and Swarts made the turn on his own at second. Ames picked Swarts' throw at first to complete the inning-ending double play.

The game stayed tied through the final three innings before extras, until McKillop broke the tie for good with a fly ball to right field. He finished the game with five RBI in the doubleheader.

Junior Ethan Weitz earned the win in extras after retiring the Stockton side in order to start the 10th.

Union will return to New Jersey for another doubleheader on Sunday, March 8, beginning at 1 p.m. against Stevens Institute of Technology.
