#69 Men's Tennis Falls Short to RIT, 5-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #69 Union College men's tennis team came a few points away from a key Liberty League victory on Sunday, but the Garnet Chargers fell just short in a 5-2 loss to Rochester Institute of Technology at Sportime Capital Region.

Junior Daniel Saxe played a role in two of Union's three wins on the day, helping to pick up the team's lone doubles win and earning one of two points in singles play. First-year Simon Philip and sophomore Vivaan Gupta had one win each for Union (8-8, 2-3 Liberty League) as well on Sunday.

RIT (8-7, 3-1 Liberty League) got off to a good start by taking two of three doubles matches to earn the first point. Gupta and Saxe kept the home team alive in doubles play with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-1) third-doubles win over Anthony Lounder and Luke Weber, but RIT's Gabriel Escobar and Alec Turcotte won the final five games of their second-doubles match to pull out a 7-5 win for the visitors.

Philip evened the match by starting singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anjann Boorels at the fifth flight, but the Tigers followed up with wins at the second, sixth and first flights to clinch the victory. Saxe finished off his perfect day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Escobar in fourth-singles action, and sophomore Arhan Gupta nearly pulled out a comeback win at the third flight as well before falling in a supertiebreaker to Sinclair, 6-3, 3-6, (10-6).

Union look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, when the Garnet Chargers head across the river to battle with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4 p.m. in Troy.
