Baseball Comes up Short in First Game of Bard Series

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team fell 6-4 against Bard College at Honey Field on Friday afternoon in the first game of a pivotal three-game series.

Graham Williams earned the save for the Raptors (10-14, 4-6 Liberty League), striking out senior Caleb Miller with two runners in scoring position to end the game.

Union (11-16, 3-7 Liberty League) led Bard 3-2 after three innings and scored a run in each of the first four frames. Miller and first-year Dennis Mulhearn were the two run producers for the Garnet Chargers, and Mulhearn and senior Cooper Ames both collected multiple hits.

Ames broke a 2-2 tie early on in the third inning, scampering home as first-year Evan Lagemann was cut down attempting to steal second. Lagemann did reach base on two occasions with a single and a walk. It is the 16th time he has been on base two or more times in a single game this season.

After Bard tagged starting pitcher senior Alex Oppenheimer for three runs (two unearned) in the bottom of the third to take the lead, Mulhearn got one run back for his squad after a throwing error from Bard's catcher allowed him to score from third following a wild pitch.

First-year Lucas Miller and senior Jack Klein combined for four scoreless innings of relief work and struck out five Raptors. However, Union's bats also went cold through most of the second half of the game.

Sophomore Ryan Calvario limited the damage in the eighth inning after Bard collected an insurance run. Pitching with the bass loaded, he ended the threat on a lineout to second base.

Mulhearn led off the ninth with a single, and Swarts moved him to third later on in the inning with a two-out single. Miller then worked a 2-2 count before striking out to end the game.

Union sits in last place of the East Division after the road loss but can get even with the second-place Raptors with a sweep at Central Park "A" Diamond. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 18.
