CANTON, N.Y. - Senior
Ellie Wintringer tallied three home runs between two games as the Union College softball team split its conference doubleheader against Clarkson University Saturday afternoon at neutral site SUNY Canton.
GAME 1: Union 6, Clarkson 4
Wintringer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore
Amy FitzPatrick finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Classmate
Carra Cleaves added a 1-for-3 performance with two RBIs, and junior
Sophia Burynski also drove in two runs.
In the first inning, Burynski delivered a double to center field that brought home Wintringer and sophomore
Kyla Springer, giving Union an early lead.
In the second, FitzPatrick scored on a sacrifice bunt error to extend the advantage.
Wintringer added to the lead in the third with a solo home run, making it 4-0. Clarkson responded in the bottom of the inning when Ryleigh Fontana singled to score Maddie Throumoulos, cutting the deficit to three.
Union added insurance in the fourth as Cleaves singled to drive in
Amelia Ormond and FitzPatrick. Clarkson answered in the inning with a double from Naomi King that scored Kaelyn Buehler, and King later crossed the plate on a two-run home run by Kendall Cuyler. However, Union held on to secure the 6-4 victory.
GAME 2: Clarkson 9, Union 7
Wintringer continued the offense in game two, going 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs (including two home runs). Rose went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Cleaves finished 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI. Springer went 1-for-4 with one run, and senior
Elizabeth Werner went 1-for-2 with one run. Junior
Maddy Ewald added a 1-for-3 performance with one RBI.
Union got on the board first in the opening inning when Wintringer homered for three RBIs, bringing home Springer and Cleaves before scoring herself to make it 3–0.
In the second inning, Union added another run when Rose advanced on a fielder's choice and later scored on a throwing error, pushing the lead to 4–0. Clarkson answered in the bottom half as Isabel Haspil walked with the bases loaded, forcing in Naomi King to make it 4–1. Ivy Borkoski then singled to score Kendall Cuyler, cutting the deficit to 4–2, before Ry Garcia followed with an RBI single to bring home Haspil and make it 4–3.
In the third inning, Union extended the lead when Ewald singled to score Werner for a 5–3 advantage.
In the fourth, Union added another run as Cleaves doubled to drive in Rose, making it 6–3. However, Clarkson erupted in the bottom of the inning. Garcia walked with the bases loaded to score Maddie Throumoulos, and Ryleigh Fontana singled to bring in Haspil, tying the game's momentum. Emily Bulone then lifted a sacrifice pop-up that allowed Ivy Borkoski to score and even the game at 6–6. Naomi King followed with an RBI single to plate Garcia and give Clarkson the lead, and Lexi Rydelek added another RBI single to score Fontana. King later scored on a wild pitch as Karyssa Parker advanced, extending Clarkson's lead to 9–6.
In the seventh inning, Wintringer hit a solo home run to bring Union within two, but it wasn't enough as Clarkson held on for the 9–7 win.
Union returns to action for a conference doubleheader against St. Lawrence University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
