ROCHESTER, N.Y. - #12/13 Rochester Institute of Technology outscored Union College by a 5-1 margin in the decisive fourth quarter to pull away for a 16-11 victory in the penultimate game of the Liberty League men's lacrosse regular season on Saturday afternoon at Judson Stadium.
With the loss, Union (5-11, 3-3 Liberty League) falls into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings with Skidmore College with one game remaining. RIT (12-4, 4-2 Liberty League) remains in a tie for second place in the Liberty League with the win.
Despite the loss, a win in next Saturday's regular-season finale against Clarkson University would secure the Garnet Chargers a postseason spot and clinch at least fourth place in the conference standings.
First-year
Garrett Salit led the way for the Garnet Chargers with a game-high five goals and six points, but no Union teammate scored more than once to help the cause. Senior
Emmett Lyne and sophomore
Brendan Powers ranked second on the team with two points on a goal and an assist apiece.
Lyne and first-year
Hayden Caulkins scored less than a minute apart to give the visitors a 2-0 lead with 4:48 elapsed in the opening quarter, and the visitors took a 2-1 lead into the second thanks to four saves from junior
Nick Lynch.
The second stanza saw both teams score four times, as Union kept its one-goal edge headed into halftime. The Garnet Chargers led by as many as two again after a pair of Salit strikes less than a minute apart put the score at 6-4 with 5:23 left, before the Tigers got one back later in the frame.
Union built up its largest lead of the day at 9-6 after a tally by junior
Mekhi Taylor finished off a three-goal stretch that also saw goals by Salit and Powers, and led by three again less than a minute later on a score by first-year
Luke Allen.
The game turned after Allen's goal with 11:10 left, however, as RIT scored the final four goals of the third quarter and five of the fourth frame's six scores to turn the tide dramatically. The Garnet Chargers managed only two shots over the final 11 minutes of the third frame, and in the fourth quarter only one of their 11 shots made it on target.
Lynch made 12 saves as Union was outshot by a 42-34 margin on the afternoon.
Union will close out the regular season and recognize its seniors with Senior Day against Clarkson beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
