Baseball Falls to New Paltz

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team fell 13-2 in eight innings against SUNY New Paltz on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Central Park "A" Diamond.

First-year Seamus Condon, sophomore Michael Del, and senior Andrew Keaveney recorded the only three hits for Union (6-11), and New Paltz (9-8) drew 13 walks with 11 hits during its road victory.

Michael Weed pitched three perfect innings to start the game for the Hawks, striking out four Garnet Chargers and earning his second win of the season. Senior Anthony Izzo matched Weed in the first inning as Union's starter, striking out two and holding New Paltz scoreless. Junior Ethan Weitz set down New Paltz in order in the second, but the flood gates opened with him as the pitcher of record in the third. He allowed a hit to lead off his second inning of work and was lifted right after for the platoon advantage from right-hander sophomore Micah Bennett

While New Paltz did score six in the third, only one of the runs was earned. The lone earned run went on Weitz' ledger, and Bennett and junior Garrick Godin were stuck with the five other unearned tallies after a dropped fly ball in left with the bases loaded.

Trailing 8-0 in the fifth, Keaveney led off the inning with his second double of the season. Condon drove him home with an RBI groundout, and Del drove in another run with a single to right. Del has two hits in his four at-bats this season.

After getting one back in the sixth, New Paltz poured on four more in the eighth to build a 13-2 lead just as the rain started to let up in the Electric City.

Union was retired in order in the bottom of the frame, giving New Paltz its first victory over the Garnet Chargers since 2008.

Union returns to conference play on Friday, April 3 at 4 p.m. against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at home.
