GENESEO, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team outscored SUNY Geneseo by a 9-1 margin over the final 30 minutes on the way to erasing an early six-goal deficit and pulling out a 14-12 victory in the team's non-conference finale on Tuesday afternoon at College Stadium.
Junior
Maddy Schiller recorded a game-high five goals and six points to lead the way for Union (10-5), which reaches the 10-win plateau for the fourth straight season under fourth-year head coach
Alyssa Treanor. Classmates
Gillian Joseph and
Hannah Compa added three goals apiece, while Compa added a game-high nine draw controls as well for the visitors.
Geneseo (9-7) controlled play in the early going, outscoring Union by a 6-1 margin in the first quarter and then scoring the opening goal of the second stanza to take a 7-1 advantage. The visitors scored three straight to get back within three midway through the quarter, but the Knights netted four of the period's final five goals to take an 11-5 lead into halftime.
The tide started to turn during the third quarter, which saw Union outshoot Geneseo by a 12-6 margin and more importantly post a 3-0 edge on the scoreboard to get back in the game. Schiller scored a player-down goal in the opening 71 seconds after a key caused turnover by Compa, and then Compa scored from the eight-meter arc to take it a four-goal game. The visitors limited the home team to just two on-target shots in the period – both stopped by senior
Sydney Widlitz – and a goal by Joseph later in the quarter kept the momentum going headed into the fourth.
The Garnet Chargers got back within a goal after tallies by Schiller and Compa in the first 2:08 of the fourth before Geneseo scored its last goal of the afternoon to take a 12-10 lead with 10:53 remaining. However, the Union defense locked down and limited the Knights to just one off-target attempt the rest of the way, while the offense scored four unanswered goals to complete the comeback. Joseph and senior
Maddie Doyle scored 1:11 apart to even the score at 12, and Schiller followed 42 seconds after Doyle's goal with her fifth of the day to put Union ahead for good. Compa added a free-position goal with 5:47 on the clock to boost the lead to two, and Union forced turnovers on Geneseo's next two possessions to help seal the win.
Union finished the afternoon with a 39-27 edge in shots, including a 21-9 advantage after halftime, and Widlitz ended the afternoon with six saves. Thanks to Compa matching Geneseo's entire team, the visitors controlled 19-of-28 draws on the afternoon and also held a 3-1 edge in goals from the eight-meter arc.
Union will close out the regular season on Saturday, when the Garnet Chargers look to lock up a top-two seed in the Liberty League Tournament with a Senior Day matchup against the University of Rochester at 4 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
