Women's Tennis Eases Past Ithaca in 6-1 Victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team clinched at least a fifth-place finish in the Liberty League regular-season standings with a 6-1 victory over Ithaca College in the penultimate match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.

Union (6-10, 4-3 Liberty League) moved into a tie for fourth place in the conference with the win, tied with Skidmore College with one match left on the schedule.

Four Garnet Chargers earned a pair of wins on the afternoon, as seniors Kennedy Alexis, Sydney Alphabet, Chara Meidani and Skylar Semon all posted victories in both singles and doubles play.

The home team started off the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to gain the opening point. Semon and classmate Claire Langille finished first with a 6-2 second-doubles wins over Ava Casell-Lapetina and Madeleine Sutro, followed by a 6-3 third-doubles win by Alphabet and first-year Jenny Park over Ekaterina Kelly and Martina Nicora. Alexis and Meidani completed the doubles sweep by defeating Sabrina Cheung and Alys Pop at the top flight, 6-3.

Union continued to control play moving to singles action. Alexis made quick work of Kyra Terman at sixth singles in a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Semon dropped only one more game in a 6-2, 6-0 first-singles triumph over Pop. First-year Megan McCusker also needed only two extra games to provide the clinching point, defeating Kelly by the game 6-2, 6-0 score.

Meidani also had an easy time with Cheung at second singles, posting a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Sutro broke up the shutout with a 3-6, 6-3, (10-6) win over Langille at third singles, but Alphabet finished off the victory by outlasting Casell-Lapetina in a fourth-singles tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

The Garnet Chargers finish the regular season tomorrow with a 2 p.m. Senior Day match against St. Lawrence University, with the chance to move into a tie for third place.
