Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Affair

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team was on the wrong end of a 22-10 game against Mount St. Mary College on Monday night at Buck Ewing "A" Diamond at Central Park.

Nine pitchers appeared in the loss for Union (16-18) as the Knights (11-22) recorded 22 hits, walked 12 times, and were hit by six pitches. Five Garnet Chargers had multi-hit performances however, led by three-hit games from junior Ryan Kolodziejczyk and seniors Cooper Ames and Andrew Keaveney

The Knights scored seven runs in the first inning with two singles, two doubles, and two home runs. Stephen Volk had a double in that first inning and finished the day 4-6 with a home run, three doubles, four RBIs, and four runs scored.

Sophomore Dylan Swarts and Ames both doubled home runs in Union's half of the first as the Garnet Chargers were able to cut the deficit down to just three after a full inning of play.

After the Knights scored runs in each of the next three innings, first-year Nolan Whelan was finally able to put up a zero for Union against Mount St. Mary in the fifth. The Union bats responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within four runs, 13-9, thanks to a sacrifice fly from first-year Seamus Condon and back-to-back RBI doubles from sophomore Benjamin Raphael and first-year Ryan Miressi

The Garnet Chargers only scored one more run in the final half of the three-hour and 46-minute contest compared to the Knights' nine.

First-year Micah Bennett allowed one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings of work late in the game with four Ks to lead his team. He stranded the bases loaded in the seventh with his second strikeout of the day. Senior Tyler Hill recorded the last out of the top of the ninth with a strikeout before Union went down in order to round out the night.

Union plays VTSU Castleton for its final regular-season, non-conference game of the year on Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m.
