#69 Men's Tennis Battles in Loss to #24 Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The #69 Union College men's tennis team dropped a second straight Liberty League matchup to a ranked opponent on Wednesday evening, battling hard in a 7-0 loss to #24 Skidmore College at the McCaffrey-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.

Skidmore (10-3, 4-0 Liberty League) won two of three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches, but Union lost one doubles match in a tiebreaker and took three singles matches to a third set in a contest that was closer than the final score indicated.

Union (7-7, 1-2 Liberty League) came a tiebreaker away from starting the night with the doubles point, but the Thoroughbreds ultimately came away with the opener. The teams split the bottom two flights, with junior Solen Bellemare and first-year Simon Philip posting a 6-2 won over Kyle Lundberg and Ege Topbas at the third flight. The deciding first-doubles battle between Union sophomores Jesus Sosa and Arhan Gupta and Skidmore's Harrison Gradin and Yuval Goodman saw the visitors break down 4-5 to stay alive and both teams hold serve to head to a tiebreak, in which Union had a match point at 6-5 only to see Skidmore rattle off four of the last five points to take the 7-6 (9-7) win.

Most of the singles matches were closely contested as well, with three going past a second set and the three others coming one break away.

Junior Daniel Saxe took the first set in his fourth-singles match against Topbas by a 7-5 score, but the Thoroughbred came back to take the final two, 6-1, 6-2. Gupta also forced a third set with a 6-3 second-set win over Fletcher King, but could not complete the comeback in the final frame of their third-singles matchup.

Sophomore Vivaan Gupta started off the final match of the day with a 7-5 first-set win over Nika Mori, but could not close out the match in a 7-5 second-set loss and a 10-2 defeat in the subsequent tiebreaker.

The Garnet Chargers have a busy weekend of Liberty League action ahead of them, beginning on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against #70 Hobart College at the Union Tennis Courts.
