SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team swept its non-conference doubleheader against Hartwick College on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 8–0 and 6–3.
Game 1: Union 8, Hartwick 0
Sophomore
Carra Cleaves dominated on the mound, striking out eight while allowing just one hit and two walks. Senior
Ellie Wintringer went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, while Cleaves added a 1-for-3 performance with two RBIs of her own. Sophomore
Sam Rose and senior
Elizabeth Werner each went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and sophomore
Sammy Fenigstein contributed a hit and two RBIs.
Union opened the scoring in the first inning when
Kyla Springer drove in Rose on a groundout, followed by Wintringer's RBI single that brought in Cleaves to make it 2–0. In the third inning, Fenigstein delivered a two-RBI single, scoring Werner and
Sophia Burynski to extend the lead to 4–0. The game was capped in the fourth inning as Cleaves drove in two runs with a single, scoring Rose and
Amelia Ormond. Wintringer added another RBI with a double to bring home first-year
Kaylee Shaw, and Werner finished the scoring with an RBI single that plated Wintringer.
Game 2: Union 6, Hartwick 3
First-year
Amelia Brancazio pitched a strong complete game, allowing just two hits and three unearned runs while striking out 10 batters and walking four over seven innings.
Offensively, senior
Riley Jahnle went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while first-year
Emily Brownell added a 1-for-2 performance with two RBIs. Senior
Elizabeth Werner went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and classmate
Haley Gibbons also went 2-for-3, scoring a run. First-year
Kaylee Shaw had a hit and scored twice, and sophomore
Coco Medeiros went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Hartwick got on the board first as Autumn Millington scored on a fielding error for a 1–0 lead. Union responded in the second inning as Jahnle's two-RBI single brought home Gibbons and Werner. In the third inning, Werner doubled to right field, driving in Shaw for a 3–1 lead. Union added three more runs in the fourth inning: Jahnle scored on an error, and Brownell's two-RBI single plated Shaw and Medeiros to make it 6–1. Hartwick scored twice in the sixth inning on a two-RBI single by Sierra Phillips, sending Casey O'Connor and Alicea Seitzinger home and closing the final score at 6–3.
Union returns to action on Friday, hosting Rensselaer for a conference doubleheader at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
