NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team swept all six singles matches to pull out a 6-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon at the North Tennis Courts.
Seniors
Sydney Alphabet and
Chara Meidani were double winners on the day to lead Union (3-9), while four other Garnet Chargers also earned singles wins as the visitors stormed back for a convincing win.
New Paltz (8-5) earned the first point of the evening by winning two of the three doubles matches. Alphabet and Meidani got the match started with a 6-0 win over Patrycja Filonik and Olivia Kunz at the second flight, but the Hawks earned a 6-2 win at the top flight and a 6-3 win at third doubles.
The Garnet Chargers responded well to the doubles defeat, however, winning three singles matches in relatively quick order before grinding out a trio of three-set triumphs.
First-year
Jenny Park evened the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kunz at sixth singles, followed soon after by classmate
Megan McCusker's pair of 6-1 fifth-singles sets to knock off Alexandra Krol. Senior
Claire Langille had seven breaks of serve in a 6-4, 6-2 third-singles win over Sydney Sladicka that moved Union within a point of a win, and Meidani finished off her two-win day by outlasting Samantha Ostrander by a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 margin at second singles to secure the victory.
Senior
Skylar Semon mounted a strong comeback to pull off a three-set win over Stanejko at the top flight, pulling out a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) win. The senior was down 5-3 in the third set and fought off three match points over the next two games before breaking to even the set at five. After both players held serve to bring up a tiebreaker, Semon earned the final two points of the extra session to finish off the win.
Alphabet provided a fitting ending to the day with a comeback win at fourth singles over Filonik, overcoming a 6-1 first set to take the final two, 6-4 and 7-5. She broke serve an amazing five times in a back-and-forth second set to even the score at a set apiece, then added four more breaks in the third set, including in the final game to complete the comeback.
The Garnet Chargers will return home for an important weekend of Liberty League play, beginning on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup with William Smith College at the Union Tennis Courts.
