Baseball's Season Comes to a Close After 5-3 Loss to SLU

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team's season ended Saturday afternoon on Buck Ewing "A" Diamond at Central Park after a 5-3 loss to St. Lawrence in the second game of the Liberty League Crossover Series.

After beating Union (17-20) on its home field for the second straight day, the Saints (20-14) earned one of the conference's four spots in the 2026 Liberty League Tournament, beginning next week.

Junior Jacob Skarlis pitched six innings with four earned runs on eight hits, keeping his squad within striking distance just as he has all season long. The Garnet Chargers found themselves down 5-0 after the top of the fourth with St. Lawrence's starter retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced.

Senior Caleb Miller reached base with a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth and scored when first-year Evan Lagemann was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season. In what ended up being Miller's final game as a Garnet Charger, the program's leader in hits, runs, at-bats, total bases, and RBIs was 1-4 with one run scored and a stolen base. To go along with his five career records, he also ends his season with the second-most home runs (23) in Union's history and the fourth-most stolen bases (51).

With Union on the board for the first time after Lagemann's RBI HBP in the fourth, the Saints did not score again thanks to two shutdown innings from Skarlis to end his day, followed by three scoreless relief innings from senior Anthony Izzo. The senior retired eight of the 10 batters he faced and struck out two.

Sophomore Michael Del led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and got to third when senior Nico Lambros hit Union's third double of the game. First-year Jack McKillop, who also had a double in the contest, drove in Del and Lambros with a single to left, drawing Union within two of the Saints, 5-3. McKillop concluded his first season in Schenectady with 25 RBIs in 124 at-bats, primarily serving as Union's leadoff hitter.

However, Union left two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings before going down in order in the ninth. After earning the win in relief Friday, Joshua Polumbo was back in the game Saturday to earn a six-out save.

The Garnet Chargers' season ended in the Crossover Series for the second season in a row. Union did post nine comeback victories in 2026, scored 10+ runs in 10 games, and batted .312 as a team.
