Volleyball Earns Pair of Wins on Day 1 of Crosstown Challenge

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College volleyball team maintained its unblemished record through the first day of the Union/Russell Sage Crosstown Classic with a 3-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill and a 3-1 win over Hartwick College on Friday night inside Viniar Athletic Center.

Union 3, SUNY Cobleskill 0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-14)
The Garnet Chargers (5-0) earned their third sweep of the season and held an opponent to single-digit points in a set for the first time this year. SUNY Cobleskill (1-6) only put up nine points in a dominant first set for Union which featured five service aces from the home team. Sophomore Shea Ringel had three of those aces in a row late in the set, giving Union its first look at set point 24-7. Union also hit .400 in the first while the Fighting Tigers posted a -.133 hitting percentage.

Senior Erin Stevens led the way with a season-high 11 kills, and senior Sydney Scanlon posted her most assists in a single match since her first season in Schenectady, tallying 33 helpers in just two sets.

Ringel, sophomore Melody Herrin, and first-year Johanna Melhorn combined for 16 kills without an error, helping their squad post its highest hitting percentage of the season so far at .371.

Union 3, Hartwick 1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26)
Union won its eight consecutive set to open the match against Hartwick (3-2), earning seven blocks along the way. Union ended the evening with 16 blocks, led by seven block assists from senior Maddie McCarron. Junior Georgia Pinciaro and Melhorn both registered block solos as well.

After Hartwick tied things up 1-1 after the second set, Union responded with a gritty eight-point victory in the third. The Garnet Chargers scored seven of the final eight points to win the integral third set, with Melhorn tallying a pair of kills during the rally.

Senior Shelby McKim and Stevens both went errorless as they posted seven and six kills, respectively. Junior Kayla Martinez Cartagena paced Union with 15 kills through the four sets, hitting .294. She also had six digs and did well on the serve receive, getting 10 of her 11 chances up.

She also helped put the finishing touches on a memorable back-and-forth final set, serving out the final two points as Union won 28-26. Union first had a look at match point at 24-21, but the Hawks rallied for a set point of their own. McCarron and Pinciaro blocked an attack from Hartwick's Lucy Walker, making the score 27-26 before Stevens buried a kill to seal the deal.

Union improved to 5-0, marking its best start to a season since also going 5-0 at the outset of the 2019 season.

The Garnet Chargers will look to move to 6-0 on Saturday, Sept. 12 as they take on Alfred State at 11 a.m. at home.
