MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team scored twice in each half to snap a three-match winless streak with a 4-1 non-conference victory over SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday evening at Drake Field.
Four different players scored for Union (5-3-1), with junior
Eamonn Kelley, sophomores
Kofi Sarfoh and
Ryan Morris, and first-year
Josiah Blake all contributing to the win. First-year
Joseph Carofano and sophomore
Cauan Souza played key roles in the victory as well by combining for four assists.
Union struck first on a free kick opportunity in the eighth minute. Souza served up a free kick from 25 yards out right to the head of Sarfoh at the top of the six-yard box for a put away and the sophomore's seventh goal of the season.
Another set piece resulted in another goal in the 17th minute, with Souza again playing the role of playmaker. After the visitors nearly had a goal seconds earlier on a header by junior
Julian Badger, Souza went to the other corner and swung a ball into the box that Morris deftly flicked off the left post and in for his first collegiate goal.
Carafano struck in the 58th minute with a beautiful ball over the top of the defense to a streaking Blake, who made one touch before chipping the ball over the oncoming keeper for the score, his fourth of the season.
Morrisville (2-5-0) broke up the shutout with a goal from the penalty spot in the 59th minute, but Kelley regained the three-goal edge less than four minutes later with a beautiful strike from 25 yards out that skipped off the right post and in.
Union ended the evening with a commanding 20-11 advantage in shots. First-year
Michael Karcher stopped all four shots he faced during the run of play to pick up the victory.
Union will look to carry its momentum into the start of Liberty League play on Saturday, when the Garnet Chargers head to the North Country to take on Clarkson University beginning at 2 p.m.
