Nick Butler completed his first season as an assistant with the Union College baseball team in 2023-24, working primarily with the catchers and outfielders. 

Butler helped the program to a 29-12 record, the best finish for the team since 2018. Union clinched the second seed in the Liberty League Crossover Series and dispatched RIT in three games to earn a spot in the Liberty League Tournament. Union went 1-2 in the conference tournament with a win over Rensselear. Union finished in the top five nationally in on base percentage (1st), scoring (t-1st), and batting average (5th). Sophomore Caleb Miller was named the Liberty League Player of the Year, first-year Jack Collins was the conference's Rookie of the Year, and the coaching staff earned Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year along with eight All-Conference players. Five players earned All-Region honors from D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association. 

Butler begins his coaching career after five years of collegiate baseball at St. Lawrence University and Marist College. Butler was a four-year starter and a three-year captain at St. Lawrence, appearing in every game during his time at Canton. Butler earned first team All-Liberty League honors his junior year, and was named a D3baseball.com All-Region honoree and earned a second straight Liberty League all-conference honor as a senior. He finished his undergraduate career with a .326 batting average, 12 home runs, and 76 RBIs in 98 games.

After graduating from St. Lawrence in 2022, he attended Marist as a graduate student and played in 32 games, hitting two home runs with 15 RBIs.
