Matthew Campbell finished his second season as an assistant coach with the Union College men’s and women’s track & field program in 2024-25, serving as the teams’ jumps specialist.
Success came quickly for Union in Campbell's first season, with three program records broken over the course of the year on the women's side. Campbell mentored first-year Ashley Sheldon, who earned USTFCCCA All-America honorable mention after becoming Union's second NCAA Indoor Championship qualifier (and first field qualifier) in the high jump. Sheldon broke three school records (indoor/outdoor high jump, indoor triple jump) and earned a conference title in the high jump on the way to Liberty League Indoor Co-Rookie of the Year honors and a pair of USTFCCCA All-Region laurels in the high jump. Sheldon continued her success as a sophomore, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and capturing a conference championship in the outdoor high jump while tying her own program outdoor high jump standard.
Campbell comes to Union from the University at Albany, where he previously served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater.
A two-time All-American in the high jump, Campbell earned All-Conference honors in all four seasons with the Great Danes indoor track & field team, including an America East title in the 2017 indoor high jump. He also earned All-Conference honors in three outdoor campaigns as well, paced by a conference title in the high jump as a first-year and another title in the triple jump as a sophomore. As a senior, he set the school record in the high jump by clearing 7’5” outdoors at the Florida Relays, and also posted the second-highest indoor high jump in program history in 2017.
