Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (January 10, 2004) The RPI Engineers defeated the Union College Dutchmen for the second time in as many nights by a 3-1 final from sold out Messa Rink at Achilles Center.
The Engineers improve to 11-8-2 on the season, and move all the way up to third place in the ECAC with a record of 6-3-1 . For Union College , it was the ninth loss in a row, as the Dutchmen drop to 7-11-3 on the season and fall to 2-7-1 in the ECAC.
Sophomore Scott Romfo's ( Blaine , MN ) second goal of the season in the first period gave RPI the early lead, taking advantage on the power play. Engineer scoring leader, sophomore Kevin Croxton ( Calgary , Alb.) scored his team leading ninth goal of the season on the power play to put the Engineers ahead 2-0 at the 6:36 mark of the second period. Senior Ryan Shields (Portage LaPrairie, Man.) added some third period insurance, scoring his second goal of the season from a beautiful drop pass by junior Vic Pereira (Abbotsford, B.C.)
The RPI defense continued to play solid throughout, until Union sophomore Ben McManama ( Medfield , MA ) broke through and tallied his first collegiate goal. That would be all for the Dutchmen as senior net minder Nathan Marsters (Grimsby , Ont) was solid for the second night in a row, making 27 saves to improve to 10-6-1 on the season for RPI.
Union sophomore Kris Mayotte (Finleyville , PA ) made 21 saves in taking the loss, now 5-10-3 on his season. The home and home series concluded with RPI out shooting the Dutchmen 52-50. Special teams for the series was key for the Engineers, going 5-17 over the two nights, Union was 0-7.
Union will head out on the road to next play at Cornell January 16 th , and the following night, January 17 th at Colgate, both games begin at 7:00 pm.
