ITHACA, N.Y. Sophomore Cam Abbotts late third-period goal lifted Cornell into a 1-1 overtime tie with Union in men's ECAC hockey Friday evening at Lynah Rink.
Scott Seney scored the Dutchmen's goal, and goaltender Kris Mayotte had an outstanding game with 32 saves. The tie ended a nine-game losing streak for Union, which is now 7-11-4 overall and 2-7-2 in the ECAC.
Freshman netminder David McKee stopped 18 shots for the Big Red, which is 7-3-6 overall and 5-1-3 in the ECAC.
Seney tallied his 10th goal of the season at 7:11 of the first period with Olivier Bouchard and Bryan Campbell assisting to put Union on top 1-0. Cornell controlled the tempo of the game, generating numerous chances, but was continually stymied by Mayotte.
The Big Red finally broke through at 14:06 of the final period when Abbott scored his sixth of the year from a scramble in front of the Dutchmen net. Senior Greg Hornby and Cams twin brother Chris picked up assists.
The Cornell power play, operating at 21.2 per cent efficiency, was unable to take advantage of two opportunities. The Big Red was whistled for three consecutive penalties in the second period, but Union was unable to score.
Union will be in action again Saturday, January 17th at Colgate at 7:00 pm.
