Box ScoreHamilton, NY - Colgate junior Steve Silverthorn's name served him well,
as the Raider net minder was brilliant in making 29 saves against the
Dutchmen (7-12-4, 2-8-2) in a 4-1 Colgate victory Saturday night from a
chilly Starr Rink.
Freshman Mike Campaner tallied the first goal of his career just
5:42 into the first period to give Colgate the early lead. Raider junior
Darryl McKinnon made it 2-0 at 10:28 of the second period. Colgate had a
chance to go up by three as they were a part of Union history this
night. Raiders junior Dave Thomas stole the puck in the neutral zone and
turned on the jets headed for Union's net. Dutchmen junior Chris
DiStefano was the only one within reach to catch Thomas, as DiStefano
hooked Thomas from behind, taking him down in front of the Union net,
and a penalty shot was called. Dutchmen net minder Kris Mayotte stood
firm as Thomas failed to score.
Union cut the lead in half on Jason Visser's seventh tallie on the
season, coming on the power play early in the third period. Two more
Raider goals would seal the deal, as Colgate recorded a weekend sweep of
Union and RPI.
Dutchmen net minder Kris Mayotte recorded 19 saves in taking
the loss, he is now 5-11-4 on the season. Union outshot Colgate 30-23 in
the game. The Dutchmen return home, as they will host Sacred Heart
University in their last non-league match up of the season January 23rd.
The game from Messa Rink begins at 7:00pm.
